About Our Alumni

Mental Health Alumni Atlanta can help you connect in a meaningful way with your peers.

Southern Live Oak Wellness believes that staying connected for a lifetime is vital for those who complete our program. Therefore, we provide ways for our mental health alumni in Atlanta to meet. We are made up of people constantly encouraging growth through healing, and we are here to guide everyone through life’s ongoing journey.

What Are Mental Health Alumni Groups?

While many are familiar with alumni associations at schools and other institutions, some might wonder what mental health alumni groups are. These are groups of individuals who have successfully completed a mental health recovery program at a facility. As a result, they are actively working toward better mental health for life.

Mental health alumni groups meet regularly to celebrate successes and discuss any challenges they may be facing after their time at our recovery facility. At Southern Live Oaks Wellness (SLOW), we know maintaining good mental health is a lifelong commitment for everyone, and we provide a safe environment for it.

Why We Offer the Alumni Program

When clients stay in our facility to focus solely on their mental health, they receive the benefits of their commitment by having constant support. However, once people re-enter the routines of everyday life, there can be an adjustment period. Obligations and other commitments may prevent someone from focusing on their mental health.

We recognize our clients are still overcoming challenges after they return home, and they still need support from a community that understands first-hand what that is like. When clients complete treatment, they begin a new way of life. Therefore, mental health alumni groups become an excellent support system for our clients after their recovery at SLOW and for life.

Being around those on the same journey is encouraging and uplifting.  In mental health care, lifelong relationships can be formed, and reuniting with friends and mentors is one of the key objectives of our program for mental health alumni in Atlanta.

Our alumni department is dedicated to helping all clients stay connected with our community and us. We have found that the alumni program serves as the perfect aftercare network for those who are looking for encouragement from others.

How Our Alumni Program Works

Since we know that the healing process is a constant journey that never ends, SLOW is here to help every step of the way. Our mental health alumni in Atlanta consist of people who have already completed our program successfully. Times can get difficult, and when continuing on the path of life, people need to have a good support group in their corner. During recovery, our clients spend time with others that are a positive influence, which is incredibly powerful and supportive.

When our clients finish care, they become a member of the SLOW community for life, and we will always be committed to helping them thrive through recovery. Our clients are able to establish meaningful and supportive relationships through alumni groups. During meetings, they engage in activities that help their recovery goals by remaining involved in the community.

At Southern Live Oak Wellness, we feel it’s crucial to stay busy and actively practice techniques to stay on track. This encourages clients to keep themselves accountable, and they will have a greater incentive to stick to their objectives by staying involved and connected with others. We believe the following:

Once our clients are discharged, our alumni coordinator will continue to follow up on a monthly basis to perform wellness checks. That way, when a person begins to struggle, we can address it immediately, hopefully avoiding additional treatment. Our mental health alumni in Atlanta also have access to a private Facebook group where their peers can be another form of support.

Alumni Outings

At SLOW, we believe it is important to incorporate fun into the therapeutic approach. Our alumni program hosts weekly meetings to keep clients involved, motivated, and on track. Additionally, our alumni also attend monthly events for a fun-filled way to socialize in a safe environment.

Below are some examples of the monthly outings our program for mental health alumni in Atlanta hosts:

  • Hiking
  • Cornhole
  • Barbecues
  • Bowling
  • Volleyball
  • Fun outdoor activities
  • Holiday-themed fun

Benefits of Joining a Mental Health Alumni Association

Alumni groups serve an essential role in each client’s healing journey. In our alumni family, our clients receive continued peer support and form lifelong connections with those who know their stories. They can also assist each other in their recovery, which can be incredibly rewarding and help solidify a person’s own healing journey. By offering words of encouragement to others, people can inspire one another in a very relatable way.

Additionally, clients are able to celebrate their successes with the group and feel the support of others who genuinely understand their progress. By connecting in person, our alumni are able to remind one another that they are never alone. These alumni groups help clients with the transition back into everyday life after a mental health crisis.

Alumni Support Group Details

At Southern Live Oak Wellness, we realize that a client’s treatment simply does not end upon discharge. Once a client is discharged, the client has the opportunity to be a part of the alumni family. The purpose of the alumni family is to change the way that the community views mental health.

In order to create change in the mental health community, we need to place a greater emphasis on a client’s long-term success. The alumni family will assist in doing this through weekly support meetings, follow-up calls, monthly events, and appointment reminders.

Our alumni meet weekly on Thursdays from 6 to 7 PM.  Members are invited to come to the Southern Live Oak Wellness clinical building at 5 PM for food and to socialize before the start of the support meeting at 6 PM. A Master’s Level clinician will facilitate each meeting. This open process group allows clients to discuss challenges after treatment and ways to adjust to everyday life. We also encourage clients to socialize with their peers to develop a support network.
