From personal relationships to career to physical health, a mental health disorder disrupts every aspect of a person’s life. Fortunately, Southern Live Oak Wellness (SLOW) offers a wide array of treatments to address and counteract our clients’ symptoms. Our outpatient program in Atlanta enables clients to seek specific mental health treatments including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy, Spravato, and individual therapy.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy represents a new frontier in mental health treatment. It refers to the method of stimulating small regions of the brain with a magnetic field generator near the patient’s head. This generator delivers low-dose magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain.

The pulses stimulate neurons at the surface of the brain, which open neural pathways that produce more positive emotions. A non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), TMS helps relieve symptoms connected to anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and chronic pain. Also, side effects are minimal.

As part of our outpatient program in Atlanta, SLOW offers TMS on an outpatient basis Monday through Friday, from 4PM to 6PM. This service may require additional costs not covered by insurance.

Spravato®

Among people diagnosed with major depressive disorder, a significant number benefit from some combination of therapy and prescription medication. The medical community refers to such cases as treatment-resistant depression. However, some people do not respond to this approach.

Spravato is the brand name for nasal esketamine, a physician-supervised nasal spray therapy that treats depression. It also works as treatment-resistant depression. A licensed medical professional administers the therapy. No one should take Spravato regularly or to relieve physical pain. SLOW offers Spravato as part of our outpatient treatment in Atlanta every Tuesday and Thursday, from 5PM to 7PM.

Research suggests Spravato works by targeting the brain’s N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which plays a role in regulating moods. As this occurs, new synapses come alive to alleviate the symptoms of major depressive disorder.

There are side effects after taking Spravato. The most serious are mild hallucinations and a feeling of disconnection. Side effects usually wear off within a couple of hours. Still, one should not drive, operate machinery, or do anything requiring one’s complete alertness until the next day.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a type of psychotherapy where a trained professional helps a patient “work through” their personal issues. Also known as talk therapy, individual therapy is an effective treatment for many emotional and mental health disorders. Both cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) can occur on an individual basis as well as EMDR therapy for trauma.

Therapy sessions allow patients to speak confidentially about their problems with a trained professional. While it may not make those problems disappear, it empowers the patient to cope with them more effectively. Oftentimes, individual therapy is compatible with other treatments, such as group therapy, family counseling, or holistic therapy.

Several SLOW therapists offer continued care post-treatment through individual therapy. In most cases, therapy is not something that is completed within 30 to 90 days. Therefore, continued outpatient therapy is crucial to an effective treatment plan.

Red Light Therapy

A lack of sunlight has been known to negatively affect people’s mental health, contributing to anxiety, depression, and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Natural light contributes to the brain’s stores of serotonin and dopamine. Very low levels of sunlight can lead to disabling mood disorders. For example, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder directly influenced by the changes in daylight hours.

Red light therapy aims to help people living with depression as well as SAD. Medical research notes when applied directly to patients’ heads, red light therapy demonstrated antidepressant properties in those living with major depressive disorder.

Red light therapy can specifically:

  • Boost energy
  • Support a more balanced mood
  • Improve mental clarity
  • Improve general positivity, confidence, and calm
  • Reduce symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Brain Mapping

Brain mapping measures an individual’s brain wave patterns in various parts of the brain. Using a diagnostic tool called a Quantitative Electroencephalogram, or QEEG, electrical patterns of the patient’s brain are measured at the surface of the scalp.

Brain mapping can be thought of as an advanced form of neuroimaging. Billions of neurons in the brain communicate messages to and from every part of the body. These messages can be measured by their electrical impulses, called brain waves. It’s these brain waves that brain mapping measures.

Thanks to brain mapping, professionals can observe several functions of the brain, including memory, learning, aging, and drug effects. Brain mapping can also provide crucial information on an array of mental health disorders like anxiety and depression.

Alpha-Stim

Alpha-Stim Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) delivers microcurrents through small clips that attach to the patient’s earlobes. These microcurrents gently stimulate nerve cells to promote normal brain functioning.

Known as Alpha-Stim for short, the Alpha-Stim Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation tool is useful and safe in treating pain, anxiety, insomnia, and depression. There are no long-term negative effects, no risk of addiction, and no drug interactions. Sleepless nights and overpowering sadness might make it difficult to get out of bed in the morning, but Alpha-Stim can help.
