As a mental health treatment program, Southern Live Oak Wellness utilizes a range of evidence-based mental health treatment modalities that helps our clients understand, grow, and recover their lives through both symptom management and the development of new life skills. We have three groups running simultaneously focused on mood, thought, and trauma. Each group is specific to the diagnosis rather than level of care. The model allows new higher level patients to witness the progress and growth of clients in our outpatient level of care and have hope. We also have daily gender specifics groups.
Our clients will gain self-confidence and understanding of their mental health from our expert team of clinicians, psychiatrist, through interacting with their peers and through immersing themselves in experiences that will benefit their long-term recovery. We don’t make our clients better people; we help them find the great person that’s already there.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps our clients become aware of negative or destructive thinking by modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors and thought processes so they can view challenging situations clearly and in a more productive way. CBT focuses on solutions, not problems, and encourages clients to challenge previously distorted ways of thinking that created destructive behaviors.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
DBT identifies and changes negative thinking patterns and pushes for positive behavioral changes. Focusing on a few key areas, DBT provides clients new skills to manage emotions and decrease both internal and external conflict. Clients will focus on four key techniques in DBT: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is a therapeutic technique that pairs feelings, emotions, and thoughts with bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, in order to effectively work through disturbing memories. EMDR therapy sessions focus on decreasing emotionality and lowering vividness of imagery that is connected with traumatic incidents. EMDR focuses and utilizes the brain’s ability to learn in order to reorganize previous experiences and develop a new healthier perspective.
We believe that treatment cannot be effective without appropriate changes in lifestyle. It’s important for our clients to find or rediscover their passions in life in order to live a life they envision for themselves. Cooking classes, job coaching, resume building, and physical wellness are all components of our program, however, we feel that if a client comes in with a desire to explore a healthy activity, it’s important they are supported in doing so.
Medication stabilization is primarily used in individuals with severe thought disorder as well as in patients who decompensate, become medication noncompliant for an extended period of time, or when the medication has ceased to work in its original capacity. Southern Live Oak Wellness provides a secure, structured, on-site medication stabilization environment. Our psychiatrist is on site 40 hours a week to monitor medications and make patients aware of potential side effects. We also have our RN run medication education groups to help clients understand the symptoms, causes, and necessity of medication.
In House Chef
Food has an impact on mental wellness. Studies show a direct relationship to what we eat and our mood. Having a chef on the staff gives us the ability to make sure that our patients eat healthy without sacrificing taste. Our chef also runs groups on how to cook food to better prepare our patients for when they are discharged.
Research has shown that recreational activities, such as exposure to nature, can provide a wide variety of mental health benefits related to mindfulness and cognition. It’s proven to help memory, stress, anxiety, sleep, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life. These benefits factor into Southern Live Oak Wellness holding weekly outings to keep the mind, body, and soul healthy and strong.
