What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects approximately 1 in every 100 people. It typically develops in the late teens or early adulthood and can cause a range of symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, disordered thinking, and abnormal behaviors. In some cases, individuals with schizophrenia may also experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

Behavior Signs Someone Needs Inpatient Schizophrenia Treatment

Changes in Mood and Emotions

Schizophrenia can cause significant changes in a person’s mood and emotions. These changes may include extreme mood swings, sudden outbursts of anger or fear, and a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable. It can also cause a person to feel helpless, hopeless, and detached from reality, leading to depression and suicidal thoughts.

If you notice any of these changes in yourself or someone you know, it is essential to seek medical help immediately. A qualified professional can diagnose the condition and recommend appropriate treatment.

Hallucinations

One of the most common symptoms of Schizophrenia is hallucinations. A person may experience vivid and intense sensory experiences that are not real, such as hearing voices, seeing things that are not there, or feeling sensations of being touched. These experiences can be frightening and can cause a person to withdraw from social situations.

If you or someone you know has been experiencing hallucinations, it is a sign that they require medical attention. Treatment may involve medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two.

Delusions

Another common symptom of Schizophrenia is delusions. These are false beliefs that are not based on reality. A person with Schizophrenia may have delusions of grandeur, where they believe they have special powers or abilities. They may also have delusions of persecution, where they believe that someone is out to get them.

Delusions can be challenging to manage without treatment. A qualified medical professional can help the person understand the nature of the delusions and provide appropriate treatment.

Disorganized Speech and Behavior

Schizophrenia can cause a person to have disorganized speech and behavior. They may struggle to communicate effectively, and their behavior may seem bizarre or inappropriate. This can make it difficult for them to form relationships or hold down a job.

If you or someone you know is exhibiting signs of disorganized speech and behavior, it is essential to seek medical attention as soon as possible. There are effective treatments available that can help manage the symptoms of Schizophrenia.

Social Withdrawal

Schizophrenia can cause a person to withdraw from social situations, leading to isolation and loneliness. They may struggle to connect with others and may avoid social settings altogether. This can have a damaging effect on their mental health and well-being.

If you or someone you know is experiencing social withdrawal, it is a sign that they require medical attention. Treatment can help alleviate the symptoms of Schizophrenia and improve the person’s quality of life.

Physical Signs Someone Needs Schizophrenia Treatment

Changes in Appearance

A person with schizophrenia may neglect their personal hygiene and appearance. They may stop bathing, brushing their teeth, or changing their clothes. Their hair may become greasy, and their skin may look dull or dry. They may also lose or gain weight rapidly, which can be a sign of a mental health disorder.

Unusual Movements

People with schizophrenia may exhibit unusual movements, such as pacing, rocking, or waving their arms around. They may also stand or sit in awkward positions for long periods. These movements are often repetitive and may be accompanied by mumbled or muttered speech. Sometimes these types of movements may lead to self-injurious behavior.

Sleep Problems

Many people with schizophrenia experience sleep problems, such as insomnia or oversleeping. They may also wake up frequently during the night or early in the morning. Sleep disturbances can lead to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

Lack of Emotional Expression

People with schizophrenia may have difficulty expressing their emotions, or they may show inappropriate emotional responses. They may speak in a monotone voice, or they may laugh or cry at inappropriate times. This lack of emotional expression may be mistaken for apathy or disconnect.

Sensory Disturbances

Schizophrenia can cause sensory disturbances, such as hallucinations or delusions. A person with schizophrenia may hear voices that others can’t hear or see things that aren’t there. They may also believe that someone is trying to harm them or that they have important information to share with the world.

Main Types of Schizophrenia Disorder

In the past, schizophrenia was considered a single disorder, but now it is understood to be a spectrum of disorders that have different symptoms, causes, and treatments. These include:

  • Paranoid Schizophrenia is characterized by delusions and hallucinations. People with paranoid schizophrenia often believe that others are plotting against them or that they are under constant surveillance. They may also hear voices or see things that are not there. These symptoms can be frightening and can make the person feel like they are losing control of their thoughts and emotions.
  • Disorganized Schizophrenia is characterized by disorganized thinking, speech, and behavior. People with this type of schizophrenia may have difficulty communicating or making sense of what is happening around them. They may also exhibit unusual behaviors such as laughing or crying at inappropriate times. This can lead to difficulties in daily life, including work, school, or social situations.
  • Catatonic Schizophrenia is a rare type of schizophrenia that involves a range of symptoms from extreme physical immobility to excessive and purposeless movement. People with catatonic schizophrenia may remain frozen in one position for long periods or engage in bizarre postures and movements that seem unrelated to their surroundings. They may also display signs of extreme rigidity or flexibility in their limbs or body.
  • Undifferentiated Schizophrenia is diagnosed when the person exhibits more than one type of schizophrenia symptom, but the symptoms do not fit into the specific criteria for the other types of schizophrenia disorders. For example, someone with undifferentiated schizophrenia may experience both paranoid and disorganized symptoms but not fit into the diagnostic criteria for either of those disorder types.
  • Residual Schizophrenia is a classification given to individuals who have experienced at least one episode of schizophrenia but are currently in a remission phase and do not suffer from any further symptoms. People with residual schizophrenia may still experience some negative symptoms, such as a decrease in energy or motivation, but they do not exhibit any positive symptoms like hallucinations or delusions.

What Our Schizophrenia Treatment Includes

Southern Live Oak Wellness provides a plethora of schizophrenia treatments in Atlanta. Each is licensed by the state of Georgia.

Medication Education

The first step to treating schizophrenia is medication. At Southern Live Oak Wellness, we educate clients on the importance of taking their medication regularly, the potential side effects, and how to cope with them. We also work with clients to find the right medication and dosage that meets their specific needs. Our goal is to empower clients to take control of their treatment and improve medication adherence.

Stabilization and Management

Schizophrenia can be a highly destabilizing mental illness, which is why Southern Live Oak Wellness emphasizes stabilization and management of symptoms. Our trained therapists work collaboratively with clients to develop personalized treatment plans that suit their needs and address their current symptoms. Our approach to treatment is holistic and individualistic. We strive to create a supportive and nurturing environment that helps our clients gain control over their lives.

Life Skills

At Southern Live Oak Wellness, we understand the importance of independent living skills in clients with schizophrenia. We offer life skills training that includes practical skills, such as managing finances, cooking, and cleaning. Equipping our clients with these skills helps them feel more independent, self-sufficient, and confident. In addition, we offer social skills training that helps clients develop healthy relationships and interpersonal communication skills.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Techniques

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based psychological intervention that focuses on mindfulness, acceptance, and values. At Southern Live Oak Wellness, we integrate ACT techniques into our treatment plans to help clients develop better coping strategies, reduce emotional distress, and improve their emotional well-being. We use techniques such as mindfulness meditation, visualization, and emotional regulation skills to help clients build healthier relationships with their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Reality Testing

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy often used to treat schizophrenia. CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns that contribute to the symptoms of schizophrenia. Additionally, it can help teach individuals how to better cope with and manage their symptoms. Reality Testing is an important part of this therapy as it works to help individuals identify when their thoughts may be false or distorted. Through reality testing, clients are able to recognize more accurate interpretations of events and use them to form positive coping strategies. CBT helps clients develop healthier patterns of thinking and behavior in order to better manage their symptoms on a daily basis.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy is a client-centered approach that emphasizes the importance of personal stories and experiences. At Southern Live Oak Wellness, we use narrative therapy to help patients explore their life experiences, identify negative thought patterns, and reframe their stories in positive and empowering ways. Narrative therapy can help patients develop more self-compassion, self-awareness, and resilience. We find that narrative therapy has been particularly helpful for patients with schizophrenia who struggle with stigma and shame.
