Behavioral Signs Someone Needs Inpatient Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Risky or Impulsive Behavior

Individuals with bipolar disorder may engage in risky or impulsive behavior during a manic episode. This can include reckless driving, drug or alcohol abuse, gambling, sexual promiscuity, or spending sprees. If these behaviors become dangerous or interfere with an individual’s daily life, inpatient treatment may be necessary to prevent harm to themselves or others.

Self-Harm or Suicidal Thoughts

Mood shifts associated with bipolar disorder can be severe, and some individuals with the condition may experience suicidal thoughts or engage in self-harm during depressive episodes. Residential or inpatient treatment provides an individual with a safe and supportive environment to address these concerns and prevent harm to themselves.

Severe Disruption of Daily Life

Bipolar disorder can impact all aspects of an individual’s life, including work, school, and social relationships. Individuals who experience difficulty performing daily tasks or maintaining relationships may benefit from inpatient treatment to establish a stable treatment plan and address any underlying issues.

Treatment Resistance

Some individuals with bipolar disorder may not respond to initial outclient treatment or experience severe side effects from medication. In these cases, residential or inpatient treatment can provide access to more intensive therapies and medication management to manage symptoms and establish long-term care plans.

Mental Health and Medical Comorbidities

Bipolar disorder often exists alongside other mental health or medical conditions that complicate treatment. Inpatient treatment can provide access to a wide range of specialized care, ensuring that individuals receive comprehensive treatment for all conditions.

Physical Signs Someone Needs Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Changes in Sleep Patterns

One physical sign someone needs bipolar disorder treatment is manifesting in their sleep patterns. A person with bipolar disorder may experience a significant decrease or increase in their sleep, and this may alternate between episodes. For instance, during the manic episode, the person may sleep for a few hours and feel as alert as ever. Conversely, during the depressive episode, the person may sleep excessively or even experience insomnia. These irregular, unstable sleep patterns can be a sign someone needs help.

Strange Weight Fluctuations

Another physical sign that may indicate the need for treatment is sudden changes in weight. During manic phases, a person with bipolar disorder may have a reduced appetite which could lead to a loss in weight. Conversely, during depressive episodes, a person may experience an increase in their appetite and gain weight quickly. If you notice a person’s weight change drastically and frequently, it could be an indication that they have bipolar disorder and are in need of help.

Impaired Cognitive Function

Bipolar disorder can also have adverse cognitive effects. When in a manic episode, a person with bipolar disorder may experience racing thoughts and an inability to concentrate. During a depressive episode, they may experience cognitive slowdowns or a mental fog. These effects of bipolar disorder can make it difficult for the person to function normally in society, and may be a sign they need treatment.

Physical Aches and Pains

Bipolar disorder can also manifest as physical pain. A person with bipolar disorder may have unexplained, chronic body pains such as headaches, stomach aches, and muscle tension. These physical complaints can be frustrating and interfere with day-to-day activities. If these symptoms persist, it’s essential to seek professional help.

Chronic Fatigue

Chronic fatigue is another physical sign someone needs bipolar disorder treatment. The condition causes a feeling of extreme tiredness and low energy that does not go away with rest. During manic episodes, a person may have too much energy, but during depressive episodes, they may feel excessively fatigued to the point where it interferes with their daily activities.

Main Types of Bipolar Disorder

In the past, schizophrenia was considered a single disorder, but now it is understood to be a spectrum of disorders that have different symptoms, causes, and treatments. These include:

  • Bipolar 1 Disorder is the most severe form of bipolar disorder. People with bipolar 1 experience intense mood swings that go from mania to depression. They may have episodes of mania that last at least seven days or hospitalization is required.  Signs of mania include extreme energy levels, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, and grandiosity. On the other hand, symptoms of depression include loss of interest in activities, low energy, feelings of hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts.
  • Bipolar 2 Disorder is characterized by depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes. Hypomania is a milder form of mania that lasts at least four days. People with bipolar 2 may experience cycles of depression and hypomania for weeks or months.
  • Cyclothymic Disorder is a milder form of bipolar disorder characterized by cycles of hypomanic and depressive symptoms. The cycles of mood swings in this condition are not severe enough to qualify as full-blown episodes of mania or depression.
  • Mixed Features in bipolar disorder means that a person experiences symptoms of mania and depression at the same time. They may feel hopeless, but also have a great deal of energy and restlessness.
  • Rapid Cycling in bipolar disorder is diagnosed when someone has four or more episodes of mania, hypomania, or depression within a year.

What Our Bipolar Disorder Treatment Includes

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors. It is a highly effective treatment for bipolar disorder as it helps individuals learn coping skills and strategies to manage mood swings. Our therapists use CBT techniques to help our clients develop skills to recognize and challenge negative thoughts, manage strong emotions, and cultivate positive self-talk.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that focuses on teaching individuals mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills. DBT helps individuals learn to manage their intense emotions, reduce self-destructive behaviors, and improve relationships. Our therapists use DBT techniques to help our clients learn problem-solving skills, emotion regulation, and positive coping mechanisms.

Medication Education

Medication management is an essential component of bipolar disorder treatment. Mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics, and antidepressants can help manage symptoms and prevent episodes from occurring. Our psychiatrists work closely with our therapists to provide medication management that is tailored to each client’s specific needs. We also monitor clients for side effects and adjust medication as necessary to ensure optimal treatment outcomes.

Family Therapy

Family therapy is an excellent way to provide support and education for individuals struggling with bipolar disorder. Family members can learn about their loved one’s condition and how to provide the necessary support at home. Our family therapy sessions help families communicate better and manage conflict around difficult topics such as medication adherence, relapse prevention, and lifestyle changes.

Internal Family Systems

Internal family systems (IFS) is a therapy approach that focuses on the relationship between a person’s personality structure and their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This approach helps individuals understand and integrate conflicting parts of themselves, allowing them to manage their symptoms more effectively. Our therapists use IFS to help our clients develop a more compassionate relationship with themselves, manage their emotions, and reduce self-destructive behaviors.
