What We Treat

Every client who enters Southern Live Oak Wellness completes a comprehensive mental health assessment at admission. This assessment is to provide our team a clear picture of the client’s mental health diagnosis and clinical treatment needs. Additionally, this allows our staff to become aware of our client’s history and background. The results of the mental health assessment then allows us to match our clients with an evidence-based treatment plan and a team of experienced mental health professionals. We treat our clients with the use of a wide range of evidence based treatment modalities that offer clients the best chance to remain in recovery from their mental illness long after leaving our program.

A person with schizoaffective disorder has a chronic mental health condition characterized by symptoms of schizophrenia, which include hallucinations or delusions, and symptoms of a mood disorder such as mania or depression. There are two major types of schizoaffective disorder: bipolar type and depressive type. Southern Live Oak Wellness has an expert team that can help get a proper diagnosis if someone is exhibiting symptoms of schizoaffective disorder. Once properly diagnosed, our team is able to properly treat that individual.

Major Depressive Disorder is a serious mood disorder. Southern Live Oak Wellness has experience and expertise in treating clients with complex diagnoses, which includes treatment-resistant depression and persistent depressive disorder.

People with anxiety disorders experience disability as a result of their response to stress. Anxiety disorders can include panic disorder, social anxiety, phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder. An untreated anxiety disorder may prevent a person from engaging in relationships, social events, meeting job or work performance requirements, and participating in other daily activities. 

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by repetitive, unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and irrational, excessive urges to do certain actions (compulsions). An individual with OCD may know that their thoughts and behaviors do not make sense; however, they are often unable to stop them.

An individual with schizophrenia may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what may be a hallucination and/or delusion. People with schizophrenia are often socially unresponsive and exhibit withdrawn behavior thus have trouble expressing emotion. Sometimes those diagnosed with schizophrenia may have a complex diagnosis, which may include schizophrenia and depression. Southern Live Oak Wellness has the expertise to aid in the treatment for those experiencing schizophrenia and/ or a complex diagnosis with schizophrenia.

A person with bipolar disorder, sometimes referred to as manic depression, experiences at least one episode of mania as well as episodes of depression. Southern Live Oak Wellness has experience and expertise in treating clients with sometimes complex diagnosis which may include bipolar disorder with psychosis, bipolar disorder and anxiety, and bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.

A person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) experienced a traumatic event(s) such as an accident, assault, military combat, or a natural disaster which has had a lasting effect on a person’s mental health. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can co-exist with other conditions such as depression and anxiety. 

Suicidality refers to suicidal thought, plans for suicide, and suicide attempts. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death worldwide. The most widely cited risk factors for suicide involve mental illnesses, genetics, drug and alcohol abuse, and family and social situations. Southern Live Oak Wellness has 24 hour staffing trained to deal with suicidal intervention and prevention. 

Self-harm typically refers to cutting, burning, scratching, and other types of external injury; although, it could also involve internal or emotional harm, such as the intake of high amounts of drugs and alcohol, or the active involvement in unsafe sex. Our staff specializes in self-injury and can educate our patients on identifying the root causes of their actions as well as help them find healthier coping mechanisms.

Eating disorders are serious conditions related to continual eating patterns that negatively affect your health, your emotions and your ability to function in essential aspects of daily life. The most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, and bingeing. Our eating disorder treatments include a combination of psychotherapy, nutrition education, medical monitoring and occasional medications.

Borderline personality disorder is a condition characterized by a persistent cycle of changing moods, self-image, and actions. These symptoms often lead to impulsive behavior and relationship problems. Individuals with BPD may experience severe episodes of anxiety, depression, and anger that could last several hours or several days. DBT, medication management, and recreational activities are just a few modalities Southern Live Oak Wellness uses to treat BPD.

Sexual trauma is any sexual act inflicted on another person without his or her consent. This may be a one-time occurrence or an ongoing experience, and it doesn't have to be physically aggressive. Everybody responds to sexual trauma in their own way, therefore everyone's reaction will be different. Types of sexual trauma and abuse may include sexual assault, rape, sexual abuse, stalking, in person sexual harassment, child sexual abuse, family sexual abuse or incest, sex trafficking, online sexual harassment , and sexual violence in relationships. Southern Live Oak Wellness offers CBT, Group Therapy, and other cutting edge treatment to help our patients overcome sexual trauma.

Psychosis is a condition that affects the way a person's brain processes information. It may cause you to lose touch with reality. Tend to see, hear, or believe things that aren’t real. Psychosis is primarily a symptom of a mental illness, stress, or trauma. Southern Live Oak utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy, medication management, and group therapy to help with patients dealing with psychosis.

Trauma is an experience of serious psychological trauma following a horrific or life-threatening incident. Sufferers may experience emotional irregularities such as intense anxiety, anger, depression, survivors guilt, or Post traumatic stress disorder. Southern Live Oak has trauma groups focused on relating to others who have had similar experiences, and helping each other grow with different therapies and coping mechanisms.

Distorted Thoughts are ways that one's mind can persuade them of something that is not real. These inaccurate thoughts are typically used to reinforce negative thoughts or emotions, giving individuals ideas that sound rational and accurate, but really only serve to keep them feeling insecure. Thought blocking, stop method, and other cognitive therapies are essential for treating our patients distorted thoughts.

Dissociative identity disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder, is associated with intense childhood experiences such as traumatic events and abuse. Southern Live Oak treats DID with psychotherapy and medication when necessary.

Many individuals who are diagnosed with mental disorders develop substance use disorders. Studies have found that about half of individuals who deal with mental illness will also experience substance abuse. Southern Live Oak is able to address any patient that is currently dealing with alcohol and substance abuse an underlying issue.
